DEFINITIONS:

Photo Etched Pins:
Photo etching is a manufacturing process that combines artwork with photography and acid etching.

Photo etched pins look similar to soft enamel pins, but require a thinner base metal and allow more detailed design.
The steps for the photo etched pins:
1. Metal cleaning: Remove the oils and dirt from the surface
2. Imaging: Generate artwork by CAD then transfer the image from a photonegative to the metal.
3. Etching: A chemical acid to produce the finished design etches the imaged metal.
4. Rinsing: After etching, the metal pieces are rinsed of the acid.
5. Coloring & Baking: Fill soft enamel into the design and bake.
6. Smoothing & Polishing: To get the final finished shape.
7. Plating: Gold, silver, nickel or antique plating.
8. Epoxy coating: For protection.

Stamped Soft Enamel:
The making of this die is the same as cloisonné pins, it starts as a cylinder piece of steel. After carving the artwork design on it, the hardening process must be performed otherwise the die is too soft to stand the stamping impact. When copper piece is stamped a tool is used to cut out the shape. If no color is applied then you go directly into plating after polishing.

Cloisonné:
Or so-called Hard Enamel is a method of decorating metal or ceramic with enameling. In China it is an antique traditional art developed some several hundred years ago. In producing cloisonné lapel pins. The base material is usually copper and struck by a die that the artwork is molded onto. The surface of the copper plate has the outline of the design after stamping. The channel formed by the outline is then filled with enamel that has glass-like material and is finely ground into a powder. If many colors are applied, only one color is fired at a time. The temperature is around 800-900 degree Centigrade. Material is then cooled down then refill enamel powder to fire again, because the enamel will shrink a little bit after firing. The next step is polishing by emery cloth until the surface is flat enough to the outline of base metal thus the design will show up. This step also smoothes the surface and assures the even exposure of the design.

Cloisonné pins are inherently scratch resistant and do not require an epoxy dome for protection. But due to the natural material the color options are limited.

an example would be...
Quantity times (*) price per each + die + Shipping (if any) + handling (if any) + rush charges (if any) = your total investment (whew!)
